There is little in this world more elemental than soup. A warmed liquid amalgam, with ingredients borrowed from individual components to form a whole, richer than the sum of its parts. The exhibition, Kishka Soup, in collaboration with the extraordinary art space Chinatown Soup, includes artwork by Megan Bogonovich, Denver Ferguson, June Gutman, and Lakea Shepard.

Like any satisfying stew, the work in this exhibition has complementary details and moments that individuate. The lush, hyper precision of Lakea Shepard’s mask work intuitively shares a focus on multiplicity with Megan Bogonovich’s fastidious florals. Bogonovich’s interest in the body and the bawdy calls to June Gutman’s piercing frankness, although in Gutman’s hands the gaze feels interior; the body and all its facets seen from the one who lives in it. Denver Ferguson creates an endless series of alien and robotic characters seemingly pulled from the outer stretches of the universe, finding interesting conversation about otherworldliness that all these artists venture toward at one point or another. These overlapping interests by artists of varying age, experience, and background, all represented by Kishka Gallery, simmer into the most scrumptious of soups.
