Chinatown Soup is pleased to present Against Misfortune, the first solo ceramic exhibition by Elizabeth New and her third activation at the gallery. Known for her curatorial work and contributions to group shows, New unveils a new body of sculptural jars that explore protection, transformation, and resilience. Elizabeth New is a New York City–based artist and designer whose ceramic work bridges storytelling, symbolism, and function. She holds an MFA in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and a BFA from Alfred University’s renowned New York State College of Ceramics, with additional studies at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Her practice draws inspiration from historical forms—particularly the naturalistic detail of Bernard Palissy and the refinement of Limoges porcelain—while reimagining them as contemporary talismans meant to offer protection and reflection.
A longtime member of Clayspace Ceramic Art Center in Brooklyn, she is deeply embedded in New York’s vibrant ceramics community. Her pieces are also available at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) Store in Manhattan, further solidifying her presence at the intersection of art, craft, and design.
