MANY MOONS

Chinatown Soup is delighted to welcome Kimmy Quillin back for her latest presentation of work, on view November 4-10 with a reception Thursday, November 7 from 6-8pm.

Many Moons is an exhibition of painted canvas that illuminates the complete lunar cycle. This series traces a visual pathway of decreasing and increasing light, encouraging us to identify the phases we knowingly and unknowingly experience. Slivers of primary-based hues are cut by razor-like achromatic lines across paintings that render the mood of moonlight in abstract form. The resulting effect calls to mind Klee as colorist coupled with the precision of Mondrian and shapes of Klint to render a muted light grid reminiscent of 1980s futurism.

Blood red and blackest brown brood through the first six renditions. ‘Tears to Rivers’ locates the fullness of a moon brimming with release that glides over its edges. 'Half Moon II’ is caught in suspension as white light bursts forth toward the final radiance of new moon ‘Maria’ that, while dark in nature, signals a moment of inner renewal on the psychic plane.

Kimmy views the phases of the moon as portals for appreciation of our human passage and evolution. From menstrual bleeds to ocean tides, following and finding ways to relate to the lunar cycle connects us to the rhythms of nature both within and without. Even amidst big city lights, the moon’s brightness beckons us to look upward. As we reflect on “the inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circled orb,” we may better commune with ourselves and others to balance the light and shadow that envelop us all.
