YOU CAN ONLY JUST PENETRATE HISTORY
Chinatown Soup is delighted to present You Can Only Just Penetrate History, an exhibition featuring Kristian Glynn's handmade universe of mixed media works, on view September 12-17, 2023. Please join us for a celebratory reception Thursday, September 14th from 6-8 pm.
Between 2011 and 2019, prolific Australian mixed media artist Kristian Glynn had five solo shows in New York City with Gitler &_____ , four of them at their now-shuttered Harlem space.
Glynn was slated to come to New York in mid 2020 to collect and pack unsold works from these five exhibitions, a visit delayed by the pandemic. His art practice is one of upcycling, incorporating found objects, discarded trash, and components from previously completed artworks. What started from necessity became a modus operandi.
This exhibition offers one last opportunity to view his handmade universe and unique visual vocabulary. Glynn’s collection will be shown for one week at Chinatown Soup with the express purpose of bartering these works. Kristian often transforms the normal into the abnormal, and we ask you to do the same: disregard typical models, and make your best offer.
Some particularly prized barter items include first and foremost: money (duh), and all currencies will be accepted—USD, Australian Dollars, Euros, Japanese Yen, Swiss Francs, Bitcoin et al. Have extra money from that trip to India? Exchange it without fee for a Kristian Glynn artwork.
Other suggestions include, but are not limited to: records (the musical kind), gift certificates, coffee credits, pizza (but not from a crappy one dollar joint), booze, airline points… you get the idea. All offers will be considered!
Australian-born Kristian Glynn is a versatile artist who thrives on working with accessible materials, from painting and drawing to sculpture and text integration. He continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, reflecting his emotional vulnerabilities. With over a dozen solo exhibitions and numerous group shows worldwide, Glynn's artistic journey has been shaped by his nearly decade-long career as an art therapist. Currently residing in Melbourne, Australia, Glynn's return to New York promises a rare experience.
