LOWSH 陋室

Chinatown Soup is pleased to present LOWSH 陋室, an exhibition featuring fine jade and wax art objects and collection products by Xiaowei Jiang, Xi(Sofia) Shen, and Zhuyin Cao that is on view January 17 - 29, 2023. Please join us for an evening reception on Thursday, 1/19 from 6-8 pm.

During the Tang dynasty, artists would retreat to a “humble” room that became a sanctuary for contemplation. The Chinese name for these special spaces inspired the title of this project and installation.

And now, a word from the artists:

We believe in the spirituality of all objects; whether it is an old dusty book on your desk or a fluffy teddy bear by your nightstand. The existence of objects not only marks the passage of time but also reflects upon and consolidates our memories. An object contains the power of a time machine. One could bring us back to a certain moment, a unique space, or even a previous self.

However, not all memories and objects live eternally. They lie quietly in time. Some memories and objects will always be with us, but some eventually fade away as we age.

To create the Lowsh exhibition series, jade and wax mediums were used to represent the connection between objects and people. Jade is to symbolize durability and wax is a representation of fragility.

We invite the viewer to re-examine and re-think past selves, memories, and what was once valued.

Participating artists met and collaborated through the Parsons Fashion Design program.
