ERROR RANGE

Chinatown Soup is pleased to present Error Range, a collection of metal, mirror, and textile sculptures by Soup Studio resident Jiwon Rhie that is on view March 1-12, 2023. Please join us for an evening reception on Thursday, March 2nd from 6-8 pm.

Through this work, Jiwon explores her relationship with identity and location as an immigrant to New York from Korea. The artist’s use of hard and soft materials in combination with reflective surfaces invites viewers to consider the impact of their surroundings on their sense of self.

A series of bra sculptures are sewn from fabric printed with a custom design, containing images of objects essential in Jiwon's life, such as her student ID cards, losing lottery tickets, and customs forms that accompanied care packages sent by her mom from Korea.

Automated mirror sculptures play with the idea of reflection and distortion, prompting contemplative and empathetic engagement with the complexities of selfhood as viewers orbit various moving pieces.
