PANGARAP

Chinatown Soup is pleased to present the debut exhibition of Tsismosas Collective, featuring artworks by Christie Rafol, Cassandra Balbas, Christianne Padilla, Casielle Gaerlan, Alitha Alford, and Andrea Miralles from May 21-26, with a tapas-style Filipino reception on May 23 from 6-8 pm, catered by Michelle Estacio. Tsismosas unveils their inaugural exhibition, Pangarap: Speaking Dreams into Reality. Through this showcase, they explore their individual relationships to the word “dream” and what it means to create, exchange stories, and take up space in today’s society.

Shared culture, individual identity, and intersectionality are the Collective’s unifying themes. How do these threads shape their individual aspirations and how do their dreams impact their artistic expression? And as advocates of conservation around “taboo” topics, what are the unspoken dreams of their community that have yet to be explored and uncovered?

The artists showcase artwork in a diverse array of mediums, ranging from an abstract use of pastels and watercolor to the whole gamut of the digital arts, including illustration and typography. They also utilize bold colors in acrylics, oil, and mixed-media collage to further share their messages. They also invite their attendees to come together and share their dreams by participating in an on-site community piece that will grow throughout the duration of the show.

By offering up their dreams, they boldly encourage fellow Filipino-Americans and BIPOC communities to dream BIG and aspire for more—for each other, and for their kabayan (countrymen) back home.
