GREENER

Welcome to Greener, an exhibit that celebrates resident artist alum Megan Lee and her transition to a home studio in the neighborhood. This collection features paintings, neon, and functional art (i.e. skateboards and cat furniture), showcasing Megan’s versatility in size, medium, and purpose. Through reworking previous pieces and incorporating new materials, Megan creates a nested and evolving body of work.

The act of covering old paintings embodies the show's title, as it pursues harmony by challenging an existing state to achieve greater beauty and balance. The human eye evolved to better perceive green, making it an essential part of our daily lives. This theme of transformation and renewal reflects Megan’s artistic growth, as she reimagines her surroundings.

Each painting in this collection reveals glimpses of its previous self, with textures from underlying layers creating unexpected surprises in the new composition. The interplay between structured grids and free-flowing lines is a signature element of Megan's style, achieving a dynamic balance within a palette of primary and complementary colors.

Bold use of color, along with motifs like flowers and flames, infuses the works with vibrant energy, evoking Megan’s Aries astrological sign in its springtime element. Also embedded within these paintings are abstract, personal messages resembling Hangul (Korean alphabet) characters and often containing the word "LOVE," further refining the artist’s visual language.

In addition to her paintings, Megan has created cement sculptures to accommodate her new roommate, Homer—a ginger-cream cat adopted from neighborhood gem Meow Parlor. This addition underscores Megan's commitment to creating a harmonious environment where all members of the household can enjoy living surrounded by art.

The materials used in this exhibit contrast sharply—delicate neon gas encapsulated in glass juxtaposed with the weighty solidity of cement. This duality mirrors the emotional landscape Megan navigates, from fragility to resilience, highlighting the experiences and emotions of city life that inform her work.

Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, June 6, from 7-9 pm, coinciding with the new moon. Please also consider participating in our donation drive to support the Gaza Skate Team.
